Palmetto St. Augustine
forms a thick lawn with slightly smaller leaf blades(8-9mm) than Raleigh with a dark emerald green color. An aggressive grass, Palmetto recovers from moderate traffic relatively quickly from above ground runners. With a massive root system, Palmetto is the most shade tolerant St. Augustine grass (needs 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight) and also the most drought tolerant. Highly susceptible to chinch bugs and fall brown patch.

Mowing is a critical and often under appreciated
cultural practice:
  • Maintain Palmetto at 2.5-3.5" (3" is optimal)
  • Heights above 3.5" will reduce quality
  • Rotary mowers are acceptable
  • Mow every 5-7 days during the active growing season
  • Mow every 10-14 days, or as needed, during cooler weather
  • Never cut more than 1/3 of the total length of the blade at any one mowing
